Individual Idea

Before we concentrate on building and producing our group project we have to plan our own individual opening scene to a thriller of our imagination. This means we have to consider all elements such as characters, setting and sub genres.

SUB-GENRE: PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
After thinking back to all the thriller films I have watched, I researched some of my favourites and found out what sub-genre they are. I found that 90% of them were classed as psychological thrillers.
I went through ideas of how I could approach producing this type of thriller. I looked up trailers and scenes of some well known psychological thrillers and found they could be easily recreated with a small budget. These films relie on you to use your brain and not just your senses so mystery and suspense are mostly created with techniques with the camera such as not showing someones face or our character being disorientated.

MY IDEA: My basic idea surrounds a troubled young man. Growing up without his birth parents after they mysteriously disappeared 10 years ago and left him in the care of his fathers best friend.

SCENE 1- Main character walking down the street in darkness towards a building.
SCENE 2- FLASHBACK. A younger version of our character with his parents enjoying the sun on a busy street. Young boy takes his fathers hand. Focus on his ring.
SCENE 3- Main character arrives in an underground parking lot and greets his friends as they prepare to go to a secret poker hall.
SCENE 4- FLASHBACK. We're back at the street and the parents are called away by someone they know but the boy cant see who due to his height. They tell him to stay put and walk to the person. Unable to see his parents he rushes through the crowd and cant find them. Then we flash to him staring up at a MISSING poster of his two parents.
SCENE 5- Our main character then walks off to go to the poker hall unaware of the man in the car watching him. Only his hands on the steering wheel are seen and the ring that once graced his missing and supposedly dead fathers finger.

CHARACTERS:
Main Character- Male in his early 20's.
Younger boy similar in looks to our main character.
Father
Mother
Best friend
2-3 extras as other friends.

SETTING-
Street at night.
Busy street during the day.
Under ground parking lot.
Car.

INSPIRATION:
Batman Begins: In this film Bruce is also faced with the cruel fate of his parents deaths. I thought that a similar approach will highlight the psychological disturbance that a young child could suffer from by not having his parents around and having them disappear right in front of them.
